A reproduction of the traditional Mien men's jacket from Taphin village, near to the Chinese border in north Vietnam, by Tamay & Me.

Every year in Taphin, a woman will make her own clothes covered in beautiful hand stitched embroidery. This embroidery tells stories of the Mien culture and connects women to the land, the mountains, the community and their story as Mien people. The embroidery used in these jackets is reclaimed from Mien old clothes, providing an income for as many families as possible.

Made with Tamay’s signature handspun, handwoven cotton from north Vietnam, naturally dyed in fermented indigo twenty-one times to create an almost black blue. The jacket is lightweight and embellished with unique hand-stitched silk embroidery.

The jackets are a square, boxy cut, with straight shoulders and extended sleeves, which is typical of Vietnam; it has a relaxed fit, quite unlike more Western tailored sleeves and shoulder lines.

The embroidery varies from garment to garment, with each jacket being unique. A jacket will be chosen at random, however, if you wish to choose your embroidery, please contact us.

Please use the following garment measurements to compare with similar items of clothing in your wardrobe that fit you well. Owing to the handmade nature of these garments, all measurements are approximate:

S - pit to pit 58cm, length at back 51cm

M - pit to pit 65cm, length at back 56cm

L - pit to pit 70cm, length at back 70cm

Tamay & Me recommend handwashing this garment in cool water, line drying and hot ironing. They use ancient fermented indigo in the dying process. There will be some colour rub when new, so please avoid contact with light colour fabrics and upholstery.
