Introducing : Maku

As we become more globally connected, we risk loosing the culture, heritage and traditions which make individual locations unique.

Founded by Santanu Das in 2011, Maku is an Indian clothing label which acts as an antithesis to fast fashion; Maku celebrates the historic heritage and craft practices of the country.

From the outset, Santanu wanted to promote indigenous crafts through the use of handwoven fabrics and natural dying, with a heavy focus on traditional indigo and the versatility of its colour range.

Based in Kolkata, West Bengal, there are one hundred weavers working for Maku, drawing on their knowledge of jamdani, khadi and muslin fabrics, along with the indigo dyes which the region has had a long association with.

Cotton-based fabric garments sit alongside pieces using linen, silk and textural yak wool. The combination of these handwoven and hand-dyed fabrics, are brought together in to garments which feature an extraordinary level of detail - embroidery, pintucks, gathering, beautiful tailoring and contrasting linings, all finished with hand-stitched labels - creating a visual representation of the traditions and heritage which are woven in to them.

It is such a pleasure to have a selection of these special garments by Maku available in the handworked shop. We look forward to increasing the collection after our move to 64 Chapel Street in April.
